Grinnell Resurvey Project
Joseph Grinnell and associated students undertook an ambitious effort to catalog California's mammalian and avian biodiversity in the early part of the 20th century. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley and several other entities revisited many of the historic survey sites this century in order to assess biodiversity responses to nearly a century of environmental change. I presently work to help synthesize results across the state, with a broader objective of understanding partially-observed dynamics over the past century to inform future projections.

SnapShot Wisconsin
In collaboration with the University of Wisconsin, NASA, and several other contributing parties, Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources has developed a statewide and year-round wildlife monitoring program that networks community (or volunteer) scientists with remote sensing for the joint purposes of engaging a broader pool of stakeholders in natural resources management and providing improved information for decision-making. My role on this project (through UW-Madison) primarily focused on building operational capacity and generating initial assessments of species status' and recent trends across the state, while testing ideas focused rooted in behavioral and community ecology.

American Marten Monitoring
American martens are important fur-bearing species and icons of northern forests. The combination of climate change, a legacy of intensive forestry practices, and exploitation via trapping pose potential threats to the long-term persistence and viability of the species in New England. In collaboration with Maine's Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, we undertook initial efforts to assess sampling techniques and designs to guide more effective monitoring for the species. Folks interested in this work should really check out the much more comprehensive work being done by Bryn Evans and others currently at the University of Maine on the same issue.

Bobcat Density and Distribution Estimation
Bobcats are a popular species for sportsmen in Wisconsin but very challenging to enumerate. In order to assess the viability of expanding harvest for the species into the southern part of the state, Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources sought rough estimates of population density in the region--we employed spatially explicit approaches to help fill this knowledge gap.
